Tour 1 On the trail of nature

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Length: 11 km
  • Start and finish: Alfsee Center
  • Note: Drive along the dike This tour takes you around the Alfsee.

You will get to know different landscape forms, created by human hands and again largely natural. There are many opportunities for nature observation along the way.

The stations

Nature reserve

This area is part of the Alfsee complex. Overall, the Alfsee was conceived and built more than 30 years ago as a flood retention basin. This part served as a reserve tank. But now things have developed differently. This area of the facility has been transformed into a valuable wet biotope and nature reserve, which serves as a retreat for many animals and especially waterfowl. The breeding bird population is varied and interesting. With a bit of luck, the rare kingfisher can be observed here.

Biological Station Haseniederung

If you want to find out more about the Alfsee and the influence of humans on nature and the landscape, then we recommend this detour to the Biological Station Haseniederung. Environmental education on topics that directly affect this region are on the program, which is aimed in particular at schools. There are also excursions and on-site investigations. The listed building was renovated according to building biology aspects. The beautiful garden surrounding the courtyard is designed as a natural garden, with vegetable, herb and flower beds, a wintering wall for insects and a bee training station.

The Alfsee

For centuries, the Hase regularly flooded the surrounding lowlands. Even small flood levels endanger more and more populated areas. For protection, the Alfsee was created as a flood retention basin. Hardly anyone would have thought more than 30 years ago that this would one day become a popular leisure and recreation area. At the same time, the Alfsee is a waterfowl resting place of international importance and is the destination of many anglers. Nevertheless, floods can still be regulated and prevented via the inflow and outflow of the Alfsee. With 20.8 million m³ of usable storage space, the Alfsee is one of the largest systems of this type in Lower Saxony.

Sea terraces

With a direct view of the lake, the lake terraces invite you to one of the many coffee specialties. There are no limits to creative taste here. Ice chocolate macchiato, caramel cappuccino or the classic espresso. We have a special insider tip for everyone for whom that is not enough: The sea breeze... a special recipe made from milk foam, orange juice, sparkling wine and a little secret recipe. Freshly baked cakes and our own creations such as the Alfsee dike cake, but also dishes such as the oven-fresh baguette or the Mediterranean tomato soup complete the offer. Children get their money's worth on the playground or the natural miniature golf course. Directly at the boat harbor with a view of the lake.

In a square directly on the Hase River there is a memorial commemorating the 750th anniversary in 1995. A small seating area invites you to take a break here.

Pilgrimage location

The origin of Rieste dates back to 1245. The Order of St. John maintained an important branch in the Coming Location. Through the so-called camp gate you enter the pilgrimage site from the west. Today, this gate also adorns the coat of arms of the community. After years of use as a hotel, the diocese of Osnabrück bought the coming location in 1999 and handed it over to the Dominican monastery "Zum Gekreuzigten Redeemer". Next to the monastery is the Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of St. John the Baptist from 1426. The tower was built in 1904. The church is richly furnished with three baroque altars and a Gothic vault, stuccoed in 1733. The most important piece of equipment is the life-size "Holy Cross of Lage", created around 1300. To this day, the faithful carry the 134 kg cross around the church and pray for the sick.

The true location of the Varus Battle - many known as the "Battle of the Teutoburg Forest" - puzzled. There were many assumptions, but hardly any certainty... ...that only changed about 20 years ago.

The stations

The story of the goal

At that time, Roman troops had occupied large areas of Germania. In the year 9 AD Germanic tribes lured the Roman army led by Publius Quinctilius Varus into an ambush in a forest area. The mastermind of the conspiracy was the Cheruscan Arminius. In three days, the 17th, 18th and 19th legions were massacred - more than 10,000 people died. The devastating defeat went down in history as the “Varus Battle”. Today, the Varus Battle in the Osnabrück region is an internationally renowned place of research and European cultural heritage. An extraordinary exhibition on the events of the Varus Battle makes it possible to experience the history of this unique place with modern media and presents an overview of the current state of science. The highlight of the collection is the impressive mask of a Roman cavalry helmet. Since 2009, visitors have been welcomed by a new visitor center with regularly changing special exhibitions on the top floor of the building. Kalkriese is one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe.
